Newborn Resuscitation: Life-Saving Steps
The moments of birth are filled with joy and hope, but complications may arise that threaten the newborn's life and require immediate medical intervention. Newborn resuscitation is a crucial skill that can help save a newborn's life if they experience respiratory or cardiac arrest.
What is Newborn Resuscitation?
It is a series of medical procedures performed to restore breathing and blood flow in newborns who are experiencing difficulty breathing or cardiac arrest after birth.
When is Newborn Resuscitation Needed?
Newborn resuscitation is performed in the following situations:
- Absence of spontaneous breathing after 60 seconds of birth.
- Slow breathing (less than 30 breaths per minute).
- Cyanosis (bluish discoloration of the skin).
- Low heart rate (less than 60 beats per minute).
Steps for Newborn Resuscitation
1. Assess the Newborn:
- Ensure that the airway is clear.
- Stimulate the newborn by rubbing their back or feet.
- If the newborn does not begin breathing spontaneously, start artificial respiration.
2. Artificial Respiration:
- Use a resuscitation bag for newborns.
- Deliver air into the newborn’s lungs for one second.
- Ensure that the newborn's chest rises.
- Repeat the process 20 times per minute.
3. Chest Compressions:
- If the newborn’s heart rate does not return after 30 seconds of artificial respiration, begin chest compressions.
- Use two fingers from one hand to press on the newborn's chest between the nipples and the sternum.
- Press the chest down by 1.5 to 2 cm.
- Perform 30 compressions in 15 seconds.
- Continue artificial respiration and chest compressions until the newborn begins to breathe and have a normal heart rate, or until medical help arrives.
Important Notes:
- Newborn resuscitation should be performed by someone trained in these procedures.
- If you are unsure what to do, seek immediate assistance from a healthcare provider.
- It is crucial to start newborn resuscitation promptly to increase the chances of survival.
