Neonatal Resuscitation: Steps to Save a Life

The moments of childbirth are filled with joy and hope, but complications that threaten the newborn's life can arise, requiring swift medical intervention. Neonatal resuscitation is a vital skill that can save a newborn's life in the event of respiratory or cardiac arrest.

What is Neonatal Resuscitation?

Neonatal resuscitation is a set of medical procedures performed to help restore breathing and blood flow in newborns experiencing difficulty breathing or cardiac arrest after birth.

When is Neonatal Resuscitation Performed?

Neonatal resuscitation is performed in the following situations:

  • No spontaneous breathing within 60 seconds after birth.
  • Slow breathing (less than 30 breaths per minute).
  • Blue skin coloration (cyanosis).
  • Low heart rate (less than 60 beats per minute).

Steps of Neonatal Resuscitation:

  1. Assess the Newborn's Condition:
    • Ensure the airway is open.
    • Stimulate the newborn by rubbing their back or feet.
    • If the newborn does not breathe spontaneously, start artificial respiration.
  2. Artificial Respiration:
    • Use a neonatal resuscitation bag.
    • Inflate the newborn’s lungs for one second.
    • Ensure the newborn's chest rises.
    • Repeat the process 20 times per minute.
  3. Chest Compressions:
    • If the newborn's heart rate does not recover after 30 seconds of artificial respiration, start chest compressions.
    • Use two fingers to press on the newborn's chest between the nipples and the sternum.
    • Press the chest by 1.5 to 2 cm.
    • Perform 30 compressions in 15 seconds.
    • Continue artificial respiration and chest compressions until the newborn breathes and has a heartbeat on their own or until medical help arrives.

Important Notes:

  • Neonatal resuscitation should be performed by someone trained in these procedures.
  • If you are unsure of what to do, seek help from a healthcare provider immediately.
  • It is crucial to begin neonatal resuscitation promptly to increase the chances of survival.
